~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~Bathsheba~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Bathsheba was the daughter of Eliam [one of King David most powerful soldiers] and the wife of Uriah [also one of King David’s soldiers]. Bathsheba has been known for the woman who slept with King David and became pregnant with his child while her husband [Uriah] was in battle. However, in respect for Christian Lover’s Month; I would like to introduce you to the Bathsheba as the Word of God defines her.
Bathsheba is a woman who experienced the grace and mercies of God. Bathsheba experienced a life of frustration due to the following incidents: According to 2 Samuel 11:2-5 ESV[It happened, late one afternoon, when David arose from his couch and was walking on the roof of the king’s house, that he saw from the roof a woman. And David sent and inquired about the woman. And one said, Is not this Bathsheba, daughter of Eliam, the wife of Uriah the Hittite? So David sent messengers and took her, and she came to him, and he lay with her. (Now she had been purifying herself from her uncleanness {menstruation}.) Then she returned to her house. And the woman conceived, and she sent and told David, “I am pregnant.”
Bathsheba frustration began when King David first laid eyes upon her, while bathing. He immediately fell to the lust of his fleshly desires by inquiring of her. The inquiries gave him the information needed to then summon her to his home and sleep with her. To better understand Bathsheba story you will have to travel back mentally before Christ. The reason you will have to mentally travel back because in Bathsheba’s days she did not have the rights that you have gained as of March 1972 via Equal Rights Amendments. This was the King that summoned her, and to better understand her situation Read:[1 Samuel 25th Chapter, where you will learn how God suffered Nabal a heart attack for insulting King David.] an insult to King David almost always lead to death. Now that you understand that Bathsheba had no choice or verbal say in what she was summoned to do with King David, I can proceed. Her frustration continued when King David rather than repent to God and His people {the Israelites}for what he had done with Bathsheba, he instead demised a plan to entrap Uriah Bathsheba’s husband with this child that he knew was his. So, he sent for him off the battlefield to come home and provide him an update of how the battle was going. After providing King David this update, he was advised to go home and wash his feet. King David knew fully well that if Uriah went home that he would be tempted to sleep with his wife. However, Uriah did not obey King David’s command but rather he slept at the door of King David’s house. When King David was informed he asked him why and he quickly expressed to him that he could not go home and eat and lie down with his wife knowing his fellow soldiers were still in war. In 2 Samuel 11:11 Uriah expresses his loyalty to King David as a soldier. So King David went a step further by having him stay 2 more days in hope of causing him to be carried away with drunkenness to sleep with Bathsheba but again King David plan failed. So, after he realized that this plan would not work he wrote a letter to the Leading Officer in the war Joab: instructing him to set Uriah in the front of the hardest fighting and then draw back from him, that he may be struck to death 2 Sam 11:15 and sent this letter in the hands of Uriah. This also defines Uriah’s loyalty to King David to have delivered his own death plan without a peek. Now Bathsheba has not only been violated by the ultimate chosen ruling power among men then, she was pregnant with his child, and informed that he plotted her husband’s death. This is serious frustration but it goes on in 2 Samuel 12 Chapter, God sends His prophet Nathan to expose King David and inform Him that his deed will not only be the cause of Bathsheba lamentation of her husband’s death but also their unborn child as well. During this prophesy David quickly acknowledged that he had offended God. God warned King David that he had forgiven him but that the sword would not leave his house. He promised King David that what he had did in secret with Bathsheba had offended Him and that He would reap the benefits in public. Bathsheba child died seven days after his birth. Bathsheba’s beauty had caused her so much pain but God showed His grace and mercies to her. You will find in 2 Samuel 12:24 That King David comforted Bathsheba after the child’s death and they conceived another son, whom King David named Solomon [peaceful] and Nathan called Jedidiah[beloved of Jehovah]. It was Bathsheba’s son Solomon whom was chosen by God as King to succeed King David out of all his wives male children. As you read 2 Samuel you will see how lust became true God given love. I believe God gave David genuine love for Bathsheba throughout his fasting and during his worship to the Lord. Bathsheba transitioned from a frustrated to a sophisticated woman during her exposure to the grace and mercies from God with her pregnancy of Solomon {The King to succeed King David}. Bathsheba’s life story shows God’s grace and mercy toward her to elect her son out of all King David’s other sons as his heir. It also shows how King David submitted to the plans and works of God by obeying and electing Solomon as King. How does this affect Bathsheba, well she was no longer seen as an object to be laid with and discarded but now a Jewel that possessed the soon to be King of Israel.
In respect of “Lover’s Month” Although Bathsheba lost her husband who was loyal to man [King David]: she gained a husband who feared and obeyed God [King David]. This is the story of a Lust to Love. A Love given to Bathsheba by God!!!!
To know the detailed story of Bathsheba and David read 2 Samuel chapters 11 & 12.
